• A47 between Brundall and Acle: safety improvements

We plan to carry out essential safety improvement works on the A47 between Brundall and Acle. This work includes improving warning signs, road markings, road studs, vegetation clearance, verge reinstatement and carriageway resurfacing, which will ensure the A47 remains in a safe and serviceable condition.

Work will take place at the following locations:

    • A47 Brundall roundabout
    • A47 eastbound at North Burlingham
    • A47 eastbound between North Burlingham and Acle

We plan to complete this work over five weeks between Monday 9 October and Friday 10 November. We will work between 8pm and 6am on weeknights only, weather conditions permitting.

    Closures and diversions

To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the A47 and divert traffic as detailed below:

    Week number Closure
Week 1 Full closure of A47 between Acle roundabout and Postwick interchange, in both directions
Week 2 A47 Eastbound between Postwick interchange and Acle roundabout
Week 3 A47 Westbound between Acle roundabout and Postwick interchange
Week 4 Full closure of A47 between Acle roundabout and Postwick interchange, in both directions
Week 5 Contingency – full closure of A47 between Acle roundabout and Postwick interchange, in both directions

Strategic eastbound traffic will be diverted from the A47 at Trowse Newton to travel southbound on the A146. Traffic will then join the A143 at Gillingham to re-join the A47 at Beccles Road, A47 interchange.

Westbound traffic will follow the same diversion as above but in reverse.

    Access to local villages

To minimise disruption on locals, we are taking additional traffic management measures to enable access and egress from local villages. These are listed below:

    • During weeks 1 and 3-5 of this scheme, despite the A47 being closed westbound at Acle roundabout, westbound traffic will still be able to access the A47 westbound between A47 Acle entry slip and Lingwood Rood. Traffic will reach a ‘hard’ closure point at High Noon Lane, Blofield, meaning access into Blofield and Brundall is maintained.
    • Whilst works on Brundall roundabout take place, temporary two-way lights will be stationed between the roundabout approaches at Cucumber Lane and Yarmouth Road, allowing the services to remain open and travel between Brundall and Blofield via Cucumber Lane.

  • Roadworks

A47 between Trowse Newton and Blofield: resurfacing

I am writing to inform you that Highways England will be carrying out essential drainage renewal works at the above location. During this work, we will also be replacing damaged safety barriers, signs, road markings and studs.

We plan to complete this work over 8 weeks from Monday 8 June to Friday 31 July, working between the hours of 8pm to 6am, subject to weather conditions.

Due to the extensive amount of work on this project, we have split the programme into three phases. We have closely liaised with county, district and parish councillors within the area, to agree the most suitable diversion routes for each phase as detailed below:

Phase 1: A47 eastbound between Trowse Newton and Cucumber Lane roundabout, starting Monday 8 June to Friday 24 July (7 weeks)

Eastbound traffic will be diverted off the A47 at Trowse Newton onto the A146. Then follow the A146 until Gillingham and the A143 to re-join the A47 at Beccles. We expect this diversion to add approximately 10 to 15 minutes to your journey. (Diagram 1)

Phase 2: A47 eastbound Trowse Newton exit slip road, starting Monday 27 July to Friday 31 July (4 nights)

Eastbound traffic wanting to leave the A47 at Trowse Newton will be diverted to Postwick roundabout and come back along the A47 westbound to Trowse Newton. We expect this diversion to add approximately 5 to 10 minutes to your journey. (Diagram 2)

Phase 3: A47 eastbound Trowse Newton entry slip road, starting Thursday 30 July to Friday 31 July (1 night)

Eastbound traffic wanting to join the A47 at Trowse Newton will be diverted along the A146 (Loddon road) to join the A47 westbound at the Harford roundabout back along the A47 eastbound. We expect this diversion to add approximately 5 to 10 minutes to your journey. (Diagram 3)

Diagrams of the diversion routes are attached.

  • Norwich Western Link public consultation

Poster Norwich Western Link May 2018

    Norwich Western Link public consultation

I am writing to let you know that next Tuesday (8 May) Norfolk County Council is launching a public consultation on whether there is a need to tackle transport issues to the west of Norwich.

When we announced plans to build the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (now ‘Broadland Northway’) north and east of the city, a lot of people said they were concerned about congestion, rat-running and other issues to the west of the city. Many wanted us to fill in what they saw as a ‘missing link’ between the Fakenham Road (A1067) and the A47.

And since plans to build the NDR were confirmed in 2015, some major changes to the area west of Norwich have been announced. Highways England intend to dual the A47 between North Tuddenham and Easton by 2022 and a food-related enterprise zone, known as the Easton Food Hub, is due to be established just south of the A47 at Easton.

At this stage, we want to know people’s views and experiences of any transport issues that exist to the west of the city and what, if anything, they believe needs to be done to improve travel in this area.

The public consultation will run from Tuesday, 8 May to Tuesday, 3 July and people can respond online at www.norfolk.gov.uk/nwl or in person at one of nine consultation events being held throughout May and June. You can find details of these events at www.norfolk.gov.uk/nwl.

Once the consultation closes, we’ll analyse the responses over the summer and let people know the results later this year and what, if anything, we propose to do to tackle any of the transport issues identified.

If you have any questions now or throughout the consultation, please get in touch via [email protected].
