Voluntary Norfolk

Last year we launched an exciting new volunteer platform Get Involved Norfolk. This has become the go-to place for Norfolk charities and organisations to advertise a huge variety of opportunities, from Craft Workshop Volunteers, Hedgehog Carers, Trustees, Events Volunteers, Digital Champions, Board Game Club Leaders and a huge amount more – there are currently over 400 roles and something to peek everyone’s interest!

It has also become the go-to place to search for a volunteering role. One of the charities advertising here has reported doubling their volunteers since advertising on this free platform.

So this may not be ‘New News’ to you…but what is new is the Corporate Volunteering page – LIVE THIS WEEK!

We thought you may have opportunities within your local area suitable for teams. Maybe a community garden that needs clearing? This is the ideal place to advertise a ‘project’ that could take a team maybe a day or 2 to complete or at least make a significant impact. Many organisations now offer their staff Employer-supported volunteering (ESV) – paid time during their working hours to volunteer. To meet the need for enquiries, we’ve created this addition to the Get Involved Norfolk site. Maybe have a chat with your teams or local community groups to identify an area that could benefit from ESV support.

The other new page is The Big Help Out. We want to take this opportunity to encourage residents to think about coming together as a community, meet like-minded people and make meaningful connections.

If you have events arranged for The Big Help out, we would like to support you in advertising these via our social channels. You can either tag us in or send the details to [email protected]

The Public Meeting tonight will start at the later time of 7.10pm, due to not being able to access the main hall until 7pm.

Time to get walking again!

With Spring on its way we start to think about getting out to walk in the beautiful English countryside again, but where to find new and interesting walks?

Walking in Norfolk https://www.walkinginengland.co.uk/norfolk has loads of walks to download and print, free, it also has books of walks, details of all the walking groups in the county and much more. Whether you want to walk on your own or with a group all the information is there in one place.

John Harris (who maintains the website) said ‘There is so much walking information on the web but it is difficult to find. Walking in Norfolk (part of the Walking in England website) has brought it together in one place so whether you are walking from home, or away on holiday, you will be able to find a walk suitable for you’.

With walks from half a mile to twelve miles plus long, and a note of suitability for pushchairs and wheelchairs, everyone can find a walk to enjoy.

So home or away, check out the websites and get walking!

Poster November 2022 Ready to Change posters – breath of fresh air

Are you worried about paying bills?

Don’t panic, help is at hand.  The most important thing is don’t hide your head in the sand.  Talk to someone and see if you can work something out.

Avoid loan sharks!  It may seem tempting to take out a short-term unregulated loan to get you out of a fix, but this can lead to huge problems down the line, including violence and intimidation and paying back many times what you borrow.

The first port of call should be your G.P. practice – ask to be referred to a social prescriber, in some areas they are called community connectors or living well connectors.  All GP services in Norfolk are connected to a team of social prescribers who are themselves connected to a range of advice and help providers and they can help you find the support you need in the quickest possible way.

Below are the details for a range of other agencies who may be able to help.

Healthwatch Norfolk launches Cost of Living Support Directory

With the cost of living rising, many people across the UK face a difficult winter. Healthwatch Norfolk has always been dedicated to highlighting available local support and appropriate services to protect the wellbeing and health of Norfolk residents. Healthwatch Norfolk has launched a cost of living support directory to help those affected by the cost of living crisis access help and support. The webpage contains a list of local services offering advice and support for those facing financial stress. The directory includes links to:

  • Financial support
  • Food banks
  • Charities/schemes
  • Health advice
  • Mental health support

Many of us, especially those most vulnerable, will feel the strain this winter. If you feel that your physical or mental health is being affected by financial stresses you should speak with your GP.  A YouGov poll commissioned by the Royal College of Physicians suggested that:
Over half of the people in Britain thought their health had worsened due to the cost of living increases. Many indicated that it was down to increased heating costs, the rising cost of food and transport costs rising.  16% of those surveyed who said they were impacted by the rising cost of living had been told by a doctor or health professional in the last year that stress caused by rising living costs had worsened their health.

Norfolk County Council       Household Support Fund autumn/winter 2022

Norfolk County Council has just announced its cost-of-living support offer, helping households in the County manage their costs. As stakeholders we wish to raise your awareness of the programme of support available, to enable you to signpost your customers to help where needed.
The Council has been allocated £6.69 million to be spent by the end of March 2023 by the government’s Household Support Fund and will add an additional £1.2m of council funds to create a total support package for Norfolk Households of just over £7.9m. The new scheme aims to provide extra support to those facing hardship this winter, as the cost-of-living crisis continues, especially around food and energy costs.
The County Council will continue to work closely with district, borough and city councils, the VCSE sector and schools to help those most in need, with a special focus on providing support for rising energy and utility bills over winter.
There have been some fantastic outcomes through the previous Household Support Fund and the work is supporting many people across Norfolk. However, the pressures continue for some, and may be particularly difficult over the winter period as households use more fuel to keep their homes warm, and the increased costs of this.
Based on previous experience, the funding is expected to provide support to around 70,000 households across Norfolk.

Below is a summary of the support that is on offer.

Support for families who receive Free School Meals
The Council will continue to provide cost-of-living vouchers for free school meals eligible children, with those eligible receiving a total of £120 in vouchers per child for the period November 2022 to April 2023.
The vouchers are provided by Edenred, which can be used in all supermarkets for essentials, including clothing.
If you are working with a family who you think may be eligible for free school meals, who are not currently receiving them, please encourage them to speak to their children’s education provider or support them in that conversation where needed.
Children who are home educated and may be entitled to the vouchers can complete the Norfolk Assistance Scheme form and will be supported to access Edenred by NAS.
For more information about free school meals

Norfolk Assistance Scheme (NAS)
NAS already provides hardship support to Norfolk residents who are struggling with their living costs. The type of support that NAS provides is tailored to the individual needs of each household. It can include food vouchers, help with buying school uniforms and gas or electricity meter pre-payments, purchasing oil and a range of other support as needed.
NCC have also invested in additional advice capacity that NAS can refer to. This means that as well as one-off financial support, people struggling with their finances will find it easier to access debt and welfare advice and support to find longer term solutions.
Find out more about the support on offer and who can apply at
NAS

Local support in the community
City, district, and borough councils are using their in-depth knowledge about their residents and local community to proactively target support to where it is most needed. This support will be delivered through existing local organisations and council services who come across individuals and families in need. City, district, and borough councils will be in touch directly with partner organisations with more detail about their individual schemes.
Norfolk’s network of 47 libraries is offering free hygiene packs with essential toiletry and sanitary products, as well as ‘warm and well’ packs including things like blankets, gloves, and socks. People will be able to go to libraires and pick up these packs in a discreet way when they need them. Libraries will also be offering self-serve hot drinks at all of their libraries this winter during their opening hours.

Winter support in general
Anyone can go to www.norfolk.gov.uk/costofliving to find out what support is available and how to access it. Organisations and support workers can also do this on people’s behalf. If people have problems accessing online services, then they can visit their local library or call on 0344 800 8020.

What can I do to help?
If you are working with, or aware of, a family who you think may be eligible for free school meals, who are not currently receiving them, please encourage them to speak to their children’s education provider or support them in that conversation where needed.
Please direct people to the website www.norfolk.gov.uk/costofliving so that they can find the right support for their needs.
If someone needs emergency help with food or fuel, then direct them to the Norfolk Assistance Scheme www.norfolk.gov.uk/NAS or tell them to call 0344 800 8020.

Neighbourhood plan April 2021 How do you see Lingwood

Hi Lingwood & Burlingham Parish Council

A velvety black sky scattered with shining stars is a sight we should all have the opportunity to see. But too often, light pollution obscures our view of stars.

Just 3% of people in England experience ‘truly dark skies’, and 61% of us live in areas with severe light pollution.

That’s why we need your help to map the nation’s view of the stars, so we can better protect our dark skies in the countryside and our towns and cities.

By counting the number of stars you can see in the constellation of Orion this February, you’ll help us build a better picture of our view of the stars.

This year we’re asking everyone to take part in Star Count from home.

Want to take part? Sign up below.

Sign up for Star Count

Not sure how to take part? Here are our five simple steps for doing a Star Count from home.

1 – Find a good spot to do your Star Count. This could be your garden, balcony, doorstep or even bedroom window. You’ll need to be able to look south.

2 – Turn off all the lights in your home so it’s as dark as possible.

3 – Look south in the night sky (the way satellite dishes face)

4 – Let your eyes adjust to the dark – the longer you wait, the better. Count the number of stars you can see within the rectangle formed by the four corner stars.

5 – Head to our website to submit your count and help us map the nation’s view of the night sky.

Want to take part? Sign up by clicking the button below.

I’ll take part

Happy star-gazing!

PS: Please don’t travel to do a Star Count, and remember to stay safe and observe social distancing rules.

Strumpshaw Recycling Centre

I am writing to let you know that we will be reopening Strumpshaw Recycling Centre on Thursday 28 May

We have been in the process of reopening our Recycling Centres since the 11 May.  This was following the Government’s updated guidance which advised that local authorities should seek to retain access to HWRC services for their residents to dispose of waste. All twenty of Norfolk’s recycling centres have been closed since 25 March 2020 when the Government restricted travel outside the home to limited essential purposes.

We currently have nine sites reopened; Dereham, Thetford, Caister, Ketteringham, Mile Cross, King’s Lynn, Sheringham, Mayton Wood and Hempton Recycling Centres. And this week we plan to open Strumpshaw, Ashill and Heacham Recycling Centres.

To manage demand and help ensure safe operations the centres will offer a restricted service and:

  • Require social distancing of two metres by all customers.
  • Operate on a managed one in one out basis for cars.
  • Only allow two adults out of a car to unload their waste.
  • Assistance will not be offered to help empty cars.
  • Provide for the disposal and recycling of the main waste streams including green waste, general waste and charged for DIY type construction and demolition waste.

We have included some frequently asked questions below but you will find all the latest information on the service here www.norfolk.gov.uk/recyclingupdates
